The Robert M. and Mary Haythornthwaite Foundation offers Founder Prizes and Grants each year through the American Academy of Mechanics. The Prize consists of a Certificate and check for $1,000, and the Grant is $9,000 for approved research. The Prizes are awarded competitively based on entrant essays on the topic "Progress through Mechanics". Winning essays are published in the Academy's journal, mechanics. Contestants are judged in part on publication history or prospects. The award is generally open to graduate students within the Americas who have completed at least one year of full-time graduate study and whose doctoral thesis topic emphasizes mechanics.
